IMPASHS “Evaluation of the impact of smoke-free policies in Member States on exposure to second-hand smoke and tobacco consumption “ is a collaborative 3 year project being funded by the European Commission’s Executive Agency for Health and Consumers.

Objective:

The general objective of the project is to analyse the existing policies on SHS control in European countries and their impact on SHS exposure and tobacco consumption, and to develop a system of indicators to evaluate and monitor them at local, national and European level.

Project Outcomes:

Specifically the expected outcomes of project are:

1. Improve methodological assessment of SHS exposure
2. Facilitate the implementation of the smoke free policies in European countries
3. Provide a list of techniques of second-hand smoke measurement that will allow the evaluation of the compliance of established laws
4. Improve the implementation and evaluation of smoke free policies in the European countries at mid long term.

The achievement of the project objectives will speed up the public awareness regarding exposure to SHS presence and risk as well as the development and enforcement of SHS control

Countries that have no legislation about the exposure to second-hand smoke and tobacco consumption will have a magnificent amount of information, and tested tools in order to decide to start a legislation process in this field and they will benefit from the experiences of other countries. With the conclusions of this project, Member States will have a good tool to evaluate their policies, if they have any, or decide which policy will be most effective in their situation.
